I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity from the grid during the evening peak. My rooftop solar system already covered most daytime use, but before adding storage, the battery would fill by lunchtime and the excess power went back to the grid for a modest credit.
The change was noticeable from the first full week. The battery charges from solar between late morning and mid-afternoon, then starts discharging around 5 p.m. when our household turns on the oven, induction hob, lights, computers, and television. I usually set a 20% reserve, so there is still backup capacity overnight. Our evening grid consumption has dropped by roughly 8 to 10 kWh on sunny days. That has cut my monthly electricity bill by about €35–€50, depending on the weather and our cooking habits.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the solar battery stopped discharging automatically for one evening. The monitoring app showed the battery at 74%, but the house was pulling power from the grid. I restarted the inverter and checked the time-of-use schedule, which had somehow reset itself. After correcting the schedule, normal operation returned. Since then, I check the app once a week rather than constantly worrying about it.
I chose LiFePO4 chemistry because I wanted a long cycle life and stable performance, not because I needed something like a “lifepo4 akku motorrad.” That phrase actually appeared in one of my early searches when I was comparing battery cells, and it made me laugh because my system is definitely for the house, not a motorcycle.
The best part is the quiet, automatic operation. I rarely think about the solar battery now; I simply notice fewer expensive peak-hour charges on my bill.
