I installed a 5kW solar array and a lifepo4 accu 48v battery last autumn, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity in the evening. The installation was less dramatic than I expected, although lifting the 48V battery into place took two people and a very careful trip down the basement steps.
Our inverter is set to charge the solar battery during the day and cover household loads after sunset. That simple change has made the biggest difference to my bills. Before storage, our electric meter raced between 5 and 9 p.m., when we cooked, ran the dishwasher, and used the heat pump. Now the battery supplies most of that period. On clear days, it still shows around 35 to 45 percent at bedtime, even after dinner and laundry. During the darkest winter weeks, it sometimes reaches only 20 percent, but it continues carrying the refrigerator, router, lights, and television overnight.
Comparing bills is more convincing than watching the app. My monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $105 over the first three comparable months, despite using the same appliances. I am saving about $80 monthly, though I know seasonal solar production affects that figure. I also appreciate having backup power during short outages. The battery switches over quickly enough that our internet equipment stays on, which is more useful than I expected.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped charging one afternoon because the inverter displayed a communication warning. I turned off the system, checked the data cable, and found it had loosened slightly behind the cabinet. After reseating it and restarting, charging resumed normally. Since then, I have kept the cable secured and check the monitoring app once a week.
For me, this home energy storage setup is not magic, but the daily savings make the investment worthwhile.
