I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, mainly because my evening electricity rates had become impossible to ignore. My rooftop panels produce plenty during the day, but before the battery I was sending much of that cheap solar power back to the grid and buying it back after dinner.
I had seen DIY discussions mentioning “lifepo4 8s,” but I chose a complete assembled battery system with a proper BMS rather than building one myself. That decision saved me a lot of worry about cell balancing and low-voltage protection.
The most noticeable change is during peak hours. Each afternoon the battery charges from surplus solar until it reaches my reserve setting. In the evening it runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi equipment, and often the dishwasher. By bedtime the state of charge is usually around thirty percent, and the grid takes over overnight.
My monthly bill dropped from roughly $210 to $115 during the first full month, though weather and utility rates affect the comparison. The best savings appear on cloudy days when I still have enough stored energy to avoid the expensive 5-to-9 p.m. period.
I had one small scare in July. The battery stopped discharging, despite showing plenty of charge. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the BMS warning screen, and found the system had entered backup reserve mode after a brief grid outage. Since then I raised the reserve from 20% to 30%, so there is enough for overnight surprises.
For me, the battery has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made solar power much more useful. I am using energy I already generated instead of exporting it cheaply, and the quiet automatic operation matters more to me than flashy features. If I expand later, I would add another battery module only after reviewing my winter usage; right now this setup feels comfortably sized.
