I installed my home battery last spring, mainly because my utility had started charging noticeably higher rates between four and nine p.m. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but without storage I was sending cheap afternoon electricity back to the grid and buying it back after dinner.
The installer recommended a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, and I chose a system built around lifepo4 310ah cells. I liked the chemistry's reputation for safety and long cycle life, though I cared more about dependable evening power than impressive specifications.
Setup was less dramatic than I expected. The crew mounted the battery in my garage, beside the inverter, and connected it to the existing solar array in one morning. The app took a couple of days to display accurate state-of-charge readings, which briefly made me wonder whether the battery backup was actually working. A firmware update fixed that; afterward, the readings tracked the inverter's local screen within one or two percent.
The biggest change came during peak hours. I set the energy storage system to charge from solar until late afternoon and discharge from 4 p.m. onward. By bedtime, the battery usually sat around 25 percent, even after running the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and my induction cooktop. On cloudy days, I still had enough reserve for essentials, although I avoid using the cooktop then because its short bursts pull power quickly.
My monthly bill fell by roughly 35 percent over the first three months. That figure varies with weather and household habits, but the satisfying part is seeing the battery cover expensive evening consumption instead of relying entirely on net metering. I also appreciate the quiet operation. I hear the inverter fan occasionally, but the battery itself has been uneventful.
For me, that reliability matters more than squeezing every possible kilowatt-hour from the solar battery.
