I installed a 10kWh home solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. The battery came from a listing described as “lifepo4 280ah shenzen,” and although the wording sounded a little odd, the specifications matched the LiFePO4 battery cells, 51.2V system, and BMS I was looking for. My rooftop solar array is only 6kW, so I was not trying to run the entire house off grid. I wanted practical solar energy storage: charge from the panels during the afternoon, then use that stored power after sunset.
The biggest difference showed up on my utility bill. Before installing the battery, my family regularly cooked, did laundry, and ran the heat pump between 5 and 9 p.m., exactly when the tariff was highest. Now the inverter switches to battery mode at 4:30 p.m. and carries most of that load. In summer, my monthly bill dropped from roughly $165 to $92, even though our usage stayed about the same. In winter, the saving is smaller, usually $35 to $50, because short days leave less solar surplus for charging. I especially like seeing the battery monitor report 80 or 90 percent state of charge at sunset; that feels more useful than exporting cheap excess energy to the grid.
My frustration happened after a cloudy weekend. The battery reached its low-voltage cutoff overnight, and the next morning it showed a warning instead of charging. I initially thought the solar battery had failed, but the BMS had disconnected for protection. I shut down the inverter, waited minutes, checked the cable connections, and restarted it according to the manual. Once sunlight returned, charging resumed normally. Since then, I have changed the reserve setting from 10 percent to 20 percent, which gives me a cushion for demand. I keep the battery indoors, where temperatures are.
