I installed my home battery storage system last spring after watching my electric bill climb every summer. The setup was less intimidating than I expected: an electrician mounted a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter, and we connected it to my rooftop solar array. The unit uses li iron phosphate cells, and I chose that chemistry mainly for safety and cycle life rather than squeezing out every last dollar of capacity.
Before storage, I sent most afternoon solar back to the grid and then bought electricity back around dinner. Now the battery charges from excess solar until late afternoon. At 4 p.m., it switches to discharge automatically, and my induction cooktop, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and lights run from stored energy through the evening. On sunny days, I often reach bedtime with 20–30% remaining. That small reserve feels useful during outages, but I don’t pretend it powers my whole house indefinitely.
The biggest practical change has been peak-hour savings. My utility charges more between 4 and 9 p.m., so shifting those five hours onto battery power has cut my monthly bill by roughly $45–$70, depending on weather and cooking. I still pay a connection fee and buy power on cloudy days, but the difference is obvious when I compare bills from last year. I also stopped obsessively timing laundry around sunlight; the battery makes that routine much easier.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery stuck at 100% for nearly an hour. I checked the breaker and inverter, then restarted the monitoring gateway. The reading corrected itself after about ten minutes, and support confirmed it was a display issue, not a charging problem. Since then, the solar battery has been pleasantly boring: quiet, low maintenance, and predictable.
