I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My system uses a li ion phosphate battery chemistry, paired with 6.5 kW of rooftop solar. The setup was less dramatic than I expected: the installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the inverter, and walked me through the app. I appreciated seeing real-time solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption in one place.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. Before storage, our electric meter climbed during those hours because cooking, laundry, and air conditioning all overlapped. Now the battery discharges after sunset, and my peak-hour usage is usually close to zero. On sunny days, it reaches 100% before dinner, then carries the house until bedtime. My monthly bill dropped by roughly 30 to 40 percent, depending on weather and how often we run the heat pump. That savings matters more to me than the app’s graphs.
I did have one scare in January. A cold, cloudy afternoon left the battery at 18%, and it stopped discharging just as the oven started. The app showed a reserve setting I had forgotten about. It was protecting the backup reserve, not malfunctioning. I lowered that reserve slightly, and the battery resumed powering the house within a minute. Since then, I keep 20% reserved for outages, which feels like a sensible compromise between solar self-consumption and emergency backup.
I still buy some grid power in winter, so this is not a magic off-grid setup. But the battery has made our solar panels far more useful after sunset. Watching the meter stay quiet during peak rates is the payoff I notice every day. For my household, predictable peak-hour savings and backup are exactly why I would choose battery storage again.
