I installed a home solar battery last spring, after watching my evening electricity use eat into the savings from our rooftop panels. The system uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry and li ion cells, with about 10 kWh of usable storage. I chose that size mostly because our utility charges much more during peak hours, from 4 to 9, and I wanted to run the house from stored solar energy after sunset.

Before the battery, our air conditioner and induction stove regularly pushed us into the expensive evening rate window. Now the battery usually finishes charging by early afternoon on a sunny day, then automatically discharges after 4 p.m. I still buy some grid power on cloudy days, but my monthly bill has fallen from roughly $180 to $95 over the past three months. That is not a perfectly consistent saving, since weather and heating use change, but the difference is very noticeable.

The most useful part has been the battery's quiet automatic operation. I hardly notice it running, and the app shows solar production, state of charge, and house consumption in one place. That made it easy to spot one small problem during the first month. The battery stopped discharging at night even though the app said it had plenty of capacity left. I checked the settings and found a backup reserve had somehow been set to 100 percent after a software update. Lowering that reserve to 20 percent fixed the issue immediately. I appreciated that I could solve it myself without calling an installer, although I did save a screenshot of the old setting before changing anything.

For me, the biggest benefit is not energy independence. It is shifting expensive electricity use into cheaper stored solar power, especially while cooking dinner and cooling the house.
