On most evenings, I used to watch the electricity meter climb after dinner, especially when the heat pump, oven, and dishwasher ran together. Since installing my home solar battery last spring, I have changed that routine completely. The battery charges from excess rooftop solar during the afternoon and discharges automatically during peak hours. It sounds simple, but seeing it happen on the app has been surprisingly satisfying.
At around 6 p.m., the house is usually drawing about 2 to 3 kilowatts, yet the grid usage stays almost flat. My average evening peak charge used to be roughly $1.20 to $1.80 per night. Now it is often under $0.30, depending on the weather. That has lowered my monthly electricity bill by about $45 to $70, and the difference is most noticeable in summer.
The battery is a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate unit, and I chose it mainly for usable capacity and backup power, not for chasing fancy features. During one cloudy week, it still carried the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and a small chest freezer through two outages. That was the moment I stopped thinking of it as just a bill-saving gadget. It became practical home backup equipment.
Setup was not entirely painless. The electrician had to update the inverter firmware, and the battery would not join the home Wi-Fi at first. I rebooted the gateway, moved the router closer, and eventually discovered a weak signal caused the problem. A short Ethernet cable fixed it, and the monitoring app has been stable since. I also noticed the system prioritizes household loads before exporting leftover solar energy, which suits me better than maximizing export credits.
