Nearly six months ago, I added a 10-kWh lithium solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. I wasn’t expecting miracles, but the change has been more noticeable than I expected.
Before the battery, I sent plenty of midday solar back to the grid and then pulled power back after dinner. My utility charges roughly 31¢ per kWh during peak hours, so that routine was frustrating. Now the battery charges from excess solar between late morning and afternoon, then runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and my office during the expensive period. On an average weekday, I use about 6–7 kWh from stored energy, which has cut my monthly bill by approximately $55–$70, depending on weather. Over the last six months, I estimate I saved just over $360. That feels real because it goes straight toward the system’s cost instead of disappearing into another utility bill.
The one annoying moment happened during a cloudy week. My battery showed 18%, but the monitoring app said it was unavailable. I checked the breaker and found the communications cable had loosened slightly after I rearranged equipment nearby. I reseated it, restarted the gateway, and the readings returned within ten minutes.
I also learned not to oversell the backup feature. It comfortably runs my essential circuits, but I don’t run the clothes dryer or electric oven during an outage. For smaller loads, I use an inverter for tv, although the battery inverter handles the house circuits automatically. That distinction matters because a battery system is most useful when I treat stored energy as limited, valuable backup power.
My favorite practical benefit is the simple routine: I check the app each morning, see overnight discharge, and know I avoided the peak rate. Solar energy now feels like something I use, not export.
