Early last summer, I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery in our garage, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop array is only 6.6-kW, so I was less interested in backup bragging rights than in using more of my own solar power.
The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter and added a new energy meter. Setup took most of a day. The fiddliest part was connecting the monitoring app to our Wi-Fi; it kept rejecting the password until I moved the router closer. I also asked for the compliance paperwork, including the reference to "iec 61727," because I wanted confidence that the grid-connected inverter settings were appropriate. Once configured, the system automatically charged from solar and discharged during our utility's 4-to-9-p.m. peak window.
The difference showed up immediately in our bills. Before installation, a typical July bill was around $210. With the battery, it fell to $128, despite running the air conditioner more often. Our evening consumption usually sits near 5 kWh, and the battery covers nearly all of it on a sunny day. I still import power after several cloudy days, but the battery's state-of-charge reserve keeps a little energy for overnight essentials.
One small troubleshooting moment happened in September. The battery stopped discharging at 6 p.m., even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the obvious things first—circuit breaker, settings, and inverter warnings. Nothing looked wrong. After calling support, the technician spotted that a firmware update had reset the time zone. Correcting it restored the peak schedule that night. It was a minor issue, but it taught me not to assume automatic controls are infallible.
Now I check the app about once a week, rather than obsessing over every kilowatt-hour. The battery has made solar feel practical, not just satisfying.
