One of the changes I’ve made to our energy routine was adding a home power station powerwall beside the inverter. Before the solar battery, our panels sent excess electricity back to the grid during the day, then we bought most of our power after dinner, when rates were highest.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to our solar inverter, and set the reserve to 20 percent. That setting gives us enough backup for an outage without wasting too much capacity. The app showed production, household consumption, and charging immediately.
What surprised me was how often we now avoid peak-rate electricity. On sunny days, the battery fills by afternoon. At 4 p.m., it switches from solar charging to powering the house, so the dishwasher, refrigerator, lights, and heat pump run from stored energy. I used to watch our meter climb during those hours; now it barely moves.
Over our first full billing month, our electricity bill fell from about $168 to $91. Weather was normal, so I’m not claiming the battery did everything; our panels produced well too. Still, shifting evening usage made the difference. The savings are noticeable in winter, when heating would otherwise overlap with expensive utility hours.
I did have one minor scare. During a firmware update, the monitoring app reported that the battery was offline, even though the status light was normal. I waited ten minutes, restarted the gateway, and checked the cables before calling support. The connection returned after a few minutes. Since then, updates have been uneventful, but I stopped scheduling them during dinner.
For me, the biggest benefit is not watching the battery percentage; it is the quieter bill. The system has made our solar panels useful and our evening energy habits less expensive.
