Nearly six months ago, I added a 10 kWh solar battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to cut the expensive evening electricity rates. Before the battery, my panels produced plenty during the day, but I still bought power from the grid after dinner when everyone was home. That always felt backwards.
The setup was easier than I expected. The installer connected the battery to my existing inverter and mounted it in the garage. I did spend a few days checking the monitoring app because the battery state of charge seemed to jump around. It turned out the system was calibrating and learning our usage pattern, not malfunctioning. After about a week, the readings settled down.
The biggest practical difference is what happens between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On a sunny day, the solar panels charge the battery by mid-afternoon. Once our electricity rate increases, the battery supplies the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and cooking appliances. I usually finish the evening with 30–40% capacity left, which gives me some backup overnight. During cloudy weather, it charges less, so I still draw from the grid, but my peak-hour consumption has dropped noticeably.
Looking at my bills, I’m saving roughly $70 to $100 per month compared with the same period last year, although weather and utility rates make the numbers vary. I particularly like having control over when I use my solar energy instead of exporting most of it for a low credit.
I wouldn’t call the battery a universal solution. Its value depends on your local tariff, panel size, and how much electricity you use after sunset. For my household, though, the solar battery has made the system feel much more useful. It is quiet, automatic, and so far has required no maintenance beyond checking the app occasionally.
