2 months ago, I added a 5kWh lithium battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My installer paired it with a hybrid inverter, and the setup took most of a Saturday, including a quick app tutorial. The crew left the walls tidy and the battery started charging before dinner.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when my utility uses peak rates. Previously, we ran the dishwasher, television, and heat pump from the grid; now the battery handles those loads after solar production ends. On an ordinary sunny day, the panels fill it by mid-afternoon, and our meter barely moves during dinner.
My bill fell from roughly $210 to $125, although weather and changing rates make that comparison imperfect. Still, peak-hour savings are real: in the first full month, the battery supplied about 95 kWh that would otherwise have been grid electricity.
One evening, it showed the state of charge stuck at 18 percent even though the sun had returned the next morning. I checked the breaker, restarted the monitoring gateway, and discovered the inverter had entered a backup reserve setting after a brief outage. Changing that setting restored normal charging; no service visit was needed. That scare taught me to leave a reserve rather than chasing maximum savings every night.
For comparison, I keep a 12v lithium ion leisure battery in our camper, but it is not the same as this home solar battery. The home unit is larger, automatically managed, and connected to our household energy monitoring.
After two months, I am happiest with the quiet, predictable routine: solar panels charge the battery, the battery carries our evening load, and the grid fills the gaps. It is not energy independence, but it has made peak electricity prices feel much less painful.
