Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Replacing my old solar setup with a battery storage system has changed how I use electricity at home. I installed the system last summer, built around a growatt 40000tl3 inverter and a 20 kWh lithium battery bank. My main goal was not complete energy independence; I simply wanted to stop buying so much expensive power during the evening.
The difference showed up almost immediately. During sunny hours, my rooftop solar panels now run the house and charge the battery. After dinner, when the utility rate increases, the battery supplies nearly everything: lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, television, and even the washing machine. Before adding storage, I regularly paid for three or four peak-rate hours every night. My monthly bill averaged about $180 in summer. Since installing the battery, it has usually been between $65 and $85, depending on air-conditioning use.
I have learned to watch the battery state of charge rather than treating it like an unlimited backup generator. I set a reserve of 25 percent, which gives me some protection during a grid outage without wasting too much usable capacity. On cloudy days, I avoid running the dryer in the evening and let the battery recharge as much as possible the next day. That small change makes a noticeable difference.
The most useful feature has been the automatic time-of-use schedule. The energy storage system charges from solar in the afternoon, then discharges during the expensive period without me pressing anything. I occasionally check the inverter app, but I rarely need to adjust it.
I did have one minor issue: the battery stopped discharging after a firmware update. A full restart of the battery and inverter fixed it, and support confirmed the settings had reset. Since then, performance has been steady. For my household, the battery has delivered practical savings, quieter nights, and much less worry about rising electricity prices.
