Replacing our old grid-only setup with solar panels and a home battery has changed the way I use electricity, especially after sunset. I chose a growatt 25 kw inverter because my installer had used one before and felt comfortable supporting it. The installation took two days. The crew mounted the inverter in my garage, connected a lithium iron phosphate battery, and set the system to prioritize solar charging during daylight. I was nervous about the app, but after a short Wi-Fi reset, it started showing battery state-of-charge, solar production, and household consumption clearly.
At first I kept checking the monitoring screen every few hours. Our utility charges its highest rate from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., and previously that period was when the air conditioner, dishwasher, and cooking appliances did the most damage to our bill. Now I let the battery carry the house through that window. On sunny days, the panels fill the battery by mid-afternoon, and the inverter automatically switches from exporting excess energy to discharging after the peak rate begins. My monthly bill fell from about $210 in summer to $128, despite running the thermostat at nearly the same setting. That is roughly $82 saved each month, though cloudy weeks reduce the difference.
When the grid flickered during a thunderstorm, the transfer happened quickly enough that our lights only blinked. One small troubleshooting moment came when the battery stopped charging on a bright morning. The app showed a communication warning, so I power-cycled the router and restarted the inverter. Charging resumed within ten minutes, and the installer later explained that the Wi-Fi connection, not the battery, had failed.
After six months, I am pleased with the practical result. This solar battery system has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made peak pricing far less painful and gives me useful backup power.
