Running my evening routine changed after I added a growatt 10k battery to our rooftop solar system last spring. We already had enough panels to cover most daytime use, but our electricity bill jumped whenever we cooked, washed clothes, or ran the heat pump after sunset. The battery now stores surplus solar power during the afternoon and feeds it back to the house through the evening peak period. That sounds simple, but watching the energy monitor has made the savings feel very real.
Before installation, I was paying around $260 a month in summer, largely because our utility charges spike from 4 to 9 p.m. With the battery reserve set at 20 percent, I typically pull only a small amount from the grid during those hours. Last July, my bill averaged $145, despite similar air-conditioner use. That’s roughly $115 saved each month, though I know rates and weather change, so I don’t treat that number as guaranteed.
The one hiccup came during a cloudy week in November. At bedtime, the app showed the battery stuck at 18 percent and refusing to discharge. I checked the breakers, restarted the inverter, and waited. Nothing changed. A support technician eventually pointed out that I had enabled a backup reserve schedule intended for an upcoming storm. Once I removed that temporary setting, the battery resumed normal operation. It was a minor mistake, but it taught me to read the operating mode before assuming the hardware had failed.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, simple routine now. I check state of charge over coffee, shift heavy loads to daylight when possible, and let the lithium battery handle the evening. The growatt 10k has not eliminated my bill, but it has made it less unpredictable. For me, that predictability is as valuable as savings.
