Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop solar system already produced more power than we used at lunchtime, but without storage, that surplus went back to the grid for a small credit. The battery changed the timing of my energy use.
On sunny days, it charges from the panels by early afternoon. Around 4 p.m., the inverter switches our house over to stored power, so the oven, lights, refrigerator, and heat pump run from solar energy after sunset. That simple shift has made the biggest difference to my bills. Before installation, our summer electric bill averaged about $165. Since adding lithium batteries for solar panels, it has usually landed between $65 and $85, depending on air-conditioning use. I am not claiming zero bills, but avoiding those peak-rate hours feels much more valuable than exporting every extra kilowatt-hour.
I can see solar production, household consumption, battery state of charge, and grid imports in one place. After a few weeks, I noticed our dishwasher was starting during the utility's expensive window. I changed its timer, and that small adjustment saved more than I expected.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight and showed “standby.” I checked the manual, restarted the gateway, and waited about ten minutes. It resumed normally. Customer support confirmed the update had temporarily disabled backup mode, which was reassuring, although I wish the app had explained that immediately.
During a short outage, the battery kept our Wi-Fi, refrigerator, and lights running without interruption. It is not a whole-house generator, but that practical backup was enough for us. My advice is to size the storage battery around evening consumption, not panel capacity. For me, the practical benefit is steadier energy spending.
