After installing my home solar battery last spring, I finally stopped watching afternoon electricity prices climb with dread. My focus was peak-hour bill savings, and the difference has been more noticeable than I expected.
I have a 6-kW rooftop solar system and a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery bank built around cells labeled “ganfeng lifepo4 3.2 v 100.” During sunny days, the panels charge the battery by early afternoon. At 4:00, the inverter switches our household loads to stored energy, so the oven, dishwasher, and heat-pump water heater run without pulling expensive grid power. Before storage, those hours were where our usage was highest. Now the utility app shows almost no grid consumption between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. On a clear day, I save roughly 7–10 kWh during that window. At my rate, that is about $2.10 to $3.00 per day, or around $65 monthly. Winter is lower, but the battery still cuts the sharpest evening spikes.
One practical detail I appreciate is how quiet the system is. The battery sits in my garage, and I hear only a fan when charging heavily. Installation was straightforward, although my electrician had to adjust the charge schedule. Initially it began charging from the grid at 5:00 p.m., exactly when rates rose. We changed the settings to solar-only charging, with a backup reserve of 25%. That small change made the battery much more useful and protected us during outages.
I did have one troubleshooting moment in July. After a thunderstorm, the inverter showed a communication warning and stopped discharging. I powered down the battery isolator for five minutes, restarted everything, and checked the cable connections. The warning disappeared, and the manufacturer’s monitoring app showed normal operation again. Since then, it has been uneventful, which is exactly what I want from energy storage.
