Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running my electric heating and cooling from a solar battery has changed the way I think about our power bill. Before installing the system, I mostly watched our rooftop solar export cheap midday electricity while buying expensive energy back in the evening. That felt wasteful, especially during winter when our heat pump ran after sunset.
I chose a lithium-ion home battery with enough usable capacity to cover our evening routine, rather than chasing the biggest advertised number. The installer mounted the battery beside the garage and connected it to our existing solar inverter. Setup took most of a day, and the only surprise was how quietly everything happened. After updating the monitoring app, we set a reserve of twenty percent for outages and let the battery charge from excess solar first.
The first full month made the difference obvious. We shifted dishwasher loads and laundry into the afternoon, then the battery carried lights, the refrigerator, internet, and our heat pump through the evening peak period. Our utility bill fell by roughly $70 compared with the same month last year, despite using the air conditioner more. Savings vary with weather and rates, but avoiding peak-hour electricity has been the real win.
I also had one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning, the app showed the battery at zero percent even though the panels were producing power. I checked the breaker and found the battery isolator had tripped. After switching it off, waiting, and resetting it, the system restarted normally. The installer explained that a firmware update had made the protection setting overly sensitive. It has not happened again, but I now glance at the monitoring screen once a week instead of assuming everything is fine.
When comparing freedom lite battery prices, I valued backup and controls more than the cheapest quote alone.
