Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
After installing my rooftop solar panels last spring, I added a battery storage unit because my electricity bills were still painful after sunset. The battery is a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate model, not the backup pack I originally imagined, though I also keep a batterie 12v 100ah battery for camping and emergency lights.
The biggest difference shows up between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. Before storage, I came home to a hot house, turned on the air conditioner, and watched the smart meter climb. Now the inverter sends excess midday solar power into the battery, then discharges it during those expensive peak hours. On a normal summer day, I use roughly 7 kWh from stored energy instead of buying it from the grid. My evening bill has fallen by about $2 to $3 per day, which works out to nearly $75 a month in the hottest season.
I did have one stressful moment during the first month. The battery stopped charging at 82%, even though the panels were producing. The monitoring app showed a “communication lost” warning. I switched off the battery isolator for five minutes, restarted the solar inverter, and checked the ethernet cable at the gateway. That reset restored communication, and the battery finished charging later that afternoon. I have not seen the problem again.
What I appreciate most is not total energy independence but control. I can schedule charging from solar, set a reserve level of 25%, and keep enough power for the refrigerator and internet during an outage. The system is quiet, requires no attention, and the app makes savings easy to verify.
I am still watching battery degradation and seasonal production, but after several months, the investment feels practical rather than flashy.
