Solution Solar Inverter
8 months ago, I installed a small solar energy storage system in my garage, built around a 280ah lifepo4 neu battery. I wanted to use more rooftop solar instead of sending cheap afternoon electricity back to the grid. My setup has a 5kW inverter, 6kW of panels, and one battery cabinet with a basic battery management system (BMS).
The biggest change is what happens after dinner. Before storage, my household pulled power from the grid throughout the evening, especially while cooking or running the heat pump. Now the battery charges during sunny hours and discharges through the expensive peak period. On a clear day, it supplies roughly 8–10 kWh overnight. My utility bill dropped from around $180 per month in summer to about $105, although rates vary. That $75 difference is more noticeable than expected, and I like seeing the inverter app show grid use near zero between 4pm and 9pm.
I did have one small scare in the first month. The battery stopped discharging at 28% state of charge, although the app showed plenty of usable capacity. After checking settings, I found the backup reserve set to 30%. Lowering it to 15% fixed the problem, and the BMS has been quiet since. I kept the reserve conservative because we sometimes lose power during storms, and I want the refrigerator and internet router running.
What I appreciate most is not having to think about the battery. The controller handles charging automatically; I check the state of charge once or twice a week. Cloudy days help less. Still, lithium iron phosphate chemistry paired with solar panels has made our evening electricity use cheaper. I would add a second battery only if winter consumption rises, but this single battery covers my practical main goal: daily peak-hour savings without changing our habits.
