Powering my home with a battery backup has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive evening power. My panels usually fill it by midafternoon, and the battery carries the house through dinner, laundry, and the television.
The biggest difference shows up on my bill. Before storage, our utility charged noticeably higher rates from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., when we were actually using the most energy. Now I set the battery to discharge during that window. On sunny months, my monthly bill dropped from around $180 to $65, although cloudy weather and heating season still push it higher. I am not completely off-grid, but reducing those peak-hour purchases feels very practical. I can see the battery percentage in the monitoring app, and watching it cover our evening load is oddly satisfying.
My setup uses an epever inverter, and installation was less intimidating than I expected, though I did spend an afternoon labeling cables and checking settings with the installer. The only real hiccup came during a storm. The battery stopped discharging, even though the app showed plenty of charge. I eventually found that a protection setting had been triggered after a brief voltage fluctuation. Cycling the system according to the manual restored normal operation, and the installer later adjusted the protection limits.
Since then, performance has been boring in the best possible way. The solar charge controller and inverter run quietly in the utility room, and I rarely think about them. I still watch temperatures and state of charge once or twice a week, especially before bad weather. For me, the value is not just backup power during outages; it is using stored solar energy when electricity costs the most. The savings feel worthwhile.
