Early summer, I installed a 10 kWh battery beside my rooftop solar system to stop buying expensive electricity in the evening. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to an inverter, and walked me through the monitoring app. The setup took most of a day, although waiting for the utility’s permission to operate took three weeks. That delay was frustrating, but the equipment installation was tidy.
My improvement has been peak-hour bill savings. Before the solar battery, my panels produced plenty during lunch, when our house was empty, and then we paid rates after dinner. Now the battery charges from surplus solar around noon and discharges from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. I run the oven, dishwasher, and heat-pump water heater during that window without pulling much from the grid. My monthly bill fell from $145 to $62 during the summer month. It varies with weather and air-conditioning use, but the difference is visible, not something promised in a brochure.
I chose a lithium iron phosphate deep cycle battery because I wanted a long service life and safety. So far, the battery has been quiet; I hear an inverter hum when it is working hard. The app shows state of charge, solar production, and grid usage clearly enough for me to spot behavior.
One troubleshooting moment happened during a storm. The battery stopped discharging, and I thought it had failed. The app showed a backup reserve setting had been raised to 80 percent because weather was forecast. Once I understood the feature, it made sense: keeping energy stored protects us during an outage. I lowered the reserve afterward, and normal cycling resumed. For me, using solar daily has been more valuable than chasing independence. It makes evening electricity cheaper and gives me backup power when the grid is unreliable.
