I installed a 10-kWh home battery last spring after getting tired of watching my evening electricity rates climb. My rooftop solar panels already produced more power than we used at lunchtime, but without storage, the surplus went to the grid for a credit that felt much smaller than the rate I paid later.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery in my garage, ran a short conduit to the inverter, and spent most of the afternoon checking settings and permits. I chose a model with lithium iron phosphate cells because the longer cycle life mattered more to me than squeezing out the lowest upfront price.
The first week taught me how much the operating schedule matters. I set the solar battery to charge from midday production and cover the house from 4:00 p.m. until midnight. On sunny days, it routinely carried our refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, lights, and internet equipment through the expensive period. My evening grid usage fell sharply; my utility bill dropped about 35% in the first full month, despite our family using the same appliances.
The savings are not spectacular every day. During rainy stretches, the battery reaches reserve earlier and I still buy electricity at peak rates. But over a full billing cycle, the difference is noticeable, especially in summer when air conditioning used to dominate our bill. I also like seeing the monitoring app show solar self-consumption rather than only panel production.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning the battery showed “standby” even though the panels were producing. I checked the app and found that a firmware update had reset the discharge window to a conservative backup setting. I restored my preferred schedule, restarted the inverter, and the system resumed by lunchtime that day.
