Solution Solar Battery
Yesterday my solar battery finally got its first workout during a week of muggy evenings. The air conditioner had been running until bedtime, and our utility’s peak rate starts at five, right when everyone gets home and turns everything on.
I used to watch the meter climb and tell myself we’d run the dishwasher later, but that only goes so far. Now the battery charges from the rooftop solar through the afternoon, then carries the house through the expensive hours. On a sunny day, it usually covers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and most of the cooling without me thinking about it. I especially like seeing the grid draw fall on the app after sunset; it feels more satisfying than staring at panels on the roof.
After a full billing period, I compared it with the same month last year, adjusting a little for weather. My bill was roughly forty dollars lower, not a miracle, but enough to notice and enough to make the battery feel useful. I know weather and rates vary, so I won’t pretend every month looks identical.
The app says one full cycle most days, though we rarely drain it completely because I leave a reserve for an outage. That reserve mattered when a brief neighborhood outage hit during dinner. The lights flickered, then the battery took over; I only noticed because the microwave clock reset. It wasn’t a dramatic rescue, just less to deal with while feeding everyone.
One annoyance was the first week: my discharge schedule was set to start too late, so I pulled grid power at peak before I caught it. Moving the time forward fixed it. I now check the charge level before a cloudy stretch, but leave the system alone. For our routine, that handoff is the win.
