Solution Solar Battery
After six months with my home solar battery, I finally feel like I am using more of my own electricity instead of watching it disappear back into the grid. My setup is a 6 kW rooftop solar array paired with a catl battery pack, installed in the garage. The biggest improvement has been during peak hours.
Before adding energy storage, our air conditioner, oven, and evening lights pushed our electricity use into the expensive part of the tariff. Now the battery charges from solar during the afternoon and starts discharging around 4 p.m. On a typical summer day, it supplies most of our evening demand until bedtime. My daily grid consumption has dropped from roughly 18 kWh to 6 or 7 kWh, and the bill savings have been noticeable. I was paying about $220 per month in the hottest months; recently, the same season has been closer to $125.
The system is not completely “set and forget,” though. One evening, I noticed the battery state of charge had stopped at 42% even though the app showed plenty of solar production earlier. I checked the inverter and found that a software update had changed the reserve setting from 20% to 40%. I lowered it again, restarted the monitoring app, and the battery returned to its normal schedule the next day. It was a small issue, but I appreciated being able to diagnose it without calling an installer.
What I like most is the quiet, predictable operation. I do not hear the battery during discharge, and the solar monitoring app makes it easy to compare production, household usage, and grid import. I am not eliminating my power bill, especially on cloudy days, but this solar battery has made our energy costs much less volatile. The best benefit is knowing that the afternoon sun is still working for us after dinner.
