After three months of watching my solar panels send excess power back to the grid, I finally bought a home battery storage system. My main goal was simple: use my own electricity after sunset instead of buying it during expensive evening hours.
The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to my inverter, and set the reserve level at twenty percent. That reserve is important to me because we get winter outages. The app showed solar generation, household consumption, battery charging, and grid import, although it took me a weekend to understand why the battery sometimes paused at ninety-five percent. It was balancing cells, not failing, which support confirmed quickly.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m. Before storage, my electric meter raced whenever we cooked, ran the dishwasher, or used our carbon heating film. Now the battery handles most of that load. On sunny days it usually reaches full charge by early afternoon, then discharges steadily through dinner and bedtime. My average evening grid purchase has dropped from roughly 8 kilowatt-hours to 2. The monthly bill is typically $35 to $50 lower, depending on weather and how often we run the heat pump. I am not pretending the battery eliminates bills; standing charges remain, and cloudy weeks still require grid electricity. However, shifting peak-hour consumption has made the savings predictable.
One minor annoyance is winter charging. On short, gray days, solar output may not refill the battery before evening. I changed the app's schedule so it charges only from solar whenever possible, while allowing a small overnight grid charge when a storm is forecast. That keeps the backup reserve intact without wasting money on unnecessary imports. After reviewing bills, I would install the same solar battery again.
