Using my solar battery after work has changed the way I think about electricity bills. I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly because my utility charges much more during the evening peak. Before storage, the solar panels produced plenty of energy during the day, but we were still buying power between 5 and 9 p.m., when dinner, lights, the heat pump, and laundry all seemed to run together.
Now the battery charges from excess solar around lunchtime and starts discharging when the peak rate begins. On sunny days, it usually carries the house through most of the evening. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $145 to between $70 and $90, depending on weather and how much heating we use. The biggest difference is not that the house is completely independent; it is that I am using more of my own solar energy instead of selling it cheaply and buying electricity back at a higher rate.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. For several days, the battery stopped discharging at 20% even though the app showed plenty of capacity. I initially thought something was wrong with the battery management system. It turned out the backup reserve had been set to 20% during installation, which was useful for outages but higher than I needed for daily bill savings. I lowered the reserve to 10%, and the system immediately began using more stored energy during peak hours. I still keep a reserve for emergencies, especially during storm season.
The LiFePO4 battery has been quiet, and I have not noticed any unusual heat or maintenance needs. If I were starting over, I would compare usable capacity, inverter compatibility, warranty support, and cycle life before I buy lifepo4 batteries. For my home, the practical win is simple: solar power collected at noon now pays for the evening instead of disappearing back into the grid.
