busbar

Until last spring, our evenings were the expensive part of the day. We have rooftop panels, but after sunset we were still buying power right when rates climbed: dinner, laundry, lights, and the heat pump all seemed to run at once. I added a home battery mainly to shift that usage, not to chase energy independence.

Setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer tied the battery into our existing solar inverter and electrical panel, and walked me through the app. I asked about the busbar; the installer explained the battery’s breaker and connection in plain language.

The change is our routine. On sunny days the battery charges after the house’s daytime needs are covered. Around the evening peak, it supplies the kitchen and most of the lights, then the grid fills in if we run several big loads together. I still avoid starting the dryer and oven at the same time. The app shows when we’re importing power, which has made me more aware of the little bursts of usage than I used to be.

Our bill has dropped most in the months when we get long, bright days and the utility’s peak window overlaps dinner. It hasn’t vanished: cloudy stretches and winter evenings still mean grid power, and the battery’s reserve is set aside in case of an outage. But the monthly savings are visible, and I like using more of our own solar instead of sending it out during the day and buying it back later.

One evening the battery seemed not to discharge. I checked the app and found its backup reserve had been raised during a settings update. Lowering it to our usual level fixed the schedule. That small hiccup was a reminder to check settings after updates, not assume the system is broken.
