Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Early last summer, I installed a 10 kWh solar battery after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump during the evening peak period. My rooftop panels were already producing more power than we used during the day, but without energy storage, most of that surplus went back to the grid for a relatively small credit.
The setup was easier than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and configured it to charge from solar between late morning and afternoon. I chose a backup reserve of 20%, so there would still be some power available during an outage. The only frustrating part was waiting for the utility approval, which took almost three weeks.
The biggest difference has been between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery, we regularly ran the oven, dishwasher, lights, and air conditioner while buying expensive peak-rate electricity. Now the battery supplies most of that power. On sunny days, it usually reaches 100% charge by mid-afternoon and carries us through dinner. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly $70 to $95, depending on the weather and how much air conditioning we use. That feels more meaningful than the app’s constantly changing estimated savings.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight. The monitoring app showed it was connected, but the system had quietly switched to backup-only mode. A quick call to the installer fixed the setting, and it has worked normally since.
For anyone comparing systems, I searched phrases like “best inverter for home with price” and eventually focused less on the cheapest quote and more on warranty support, battery compatibility, and usable capacity. My solar battery has not eliminated my bill, but it has made our home energy costs much more predictable—and that practical peace of mind has been the best part.
