After six months of watching my electricity bills climb, I finally installed a battery storage system for home alongside my rooftop solar panels. I chose a 10-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, rather than trying to cover every possible outage. My main goal was simple: store midday solar and use it during the expensive evening hours.
The installation took most of a day. The electrician mounted the battery in my garage, added a backup subpanel, and connected the inverter to my existing solar array. I had expected walls of dust, but the process was surprisingly tidy. The only frustrating part was waiting for the utility to approve the grid connection; I could charge the battery immediately, but export settings stayed disabled for several days.
Once permission came through, I set the battery to charge from solar first and avoid grid charging unless there was a long cloudy stretch. On sunny days, my panels fill it by about 2:30 p.m., even when the air conditioner is running. By dinner, my household switches to battery power automatically.
This changed my bill more than I expected. Before storage, my peak usage ran from 4 to 9 p.m., when we cooked, ran the dishwasher, and charged phones and laptops. Now, the battery handles nearly all of that. My first full month with the system cut the bill from $186 to $103. That is not a dramatic whole-house reduction, but saving $83 in one month felt real, especially because our solar production would otherwise have been sent back to the grid for a small credit.
One hot week, the app showed 18 percent despite strong sun. A communications drop had put the inverter in standby. Restarting the gateway fixed it, and charging resumed. Since then, the battery has been quiet, dependable, and reassuring.
