Solution Solar Battery
After installing a 10-kWh battery storage unit beside my inverter last spring, I stopped thinking about electricity as something that simply disappeared from the house. The change I noticed first was dinner. Our solar panels finish producing around 5:30, when our oven, lights, and heat-pump water heater start working hardest. Before the solar battery, the house pulled expensive evening power from the grid. Now the battery takes over, and I can see it discharging on the app.
My utility has time-of-use rates, so that handoff matters more than the capacity number. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100 percent by mid-afternoon, then carries us through the peak window until about 9 p.m. My monthly bills have fallen from roughly $180 in summer to $70 or $80, depending on air-conditioning use. I am saving about $100 months, not because we became energy-efficient, but because we stopped buying as much peak-priced electricity. That feels satisfying when I check the utility statement and see our grid consumption drop after sunset.
The only hiccup came during a cloudy week in November. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected, and the app showed a warning about low solar input. I assumed something had failed. After checking the inverter, I found the backup reserve was set to 40%, higher than I remembered. Lowering it to 20% gave us more usable capacity without calling a technician. The warning disappeared the next sunny day.
I still keep that reserve because outages are uncommon here, but having battery backup makes short evening outages less stressful. The system is quiet, and I rarely think about maintenance beyond checking the app twice a week. For me, the best proof is boring: our house runs normally, while solar power does more of the work.
