SUN

Using my solar battery during peak hours has changed the way I think about our electricity bill. I installed a SUN storage system last summer, mainly because our utility’s evening rates had become ridiculous. The panels usually finish charging the battery by midafternoon, and then the system carries us through dinner, laundry, and the children’s bedtime.

Before the battery, our air conditioner was the biggest evening expense. Now I set the inverter to discharge after 4 p.m., when our rates jump. On a typical sunny day, the battery supplies roughly 8 to 10 kilowatt-hours before midnight. That has cut our monthly bill by about $65 in summer, although the exact savings depend on weather and how aggressively we use the AC. I especially notice the difference on hot weekends, when the battery runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and cooling without pulling much from the grid.

I did have one small troubleshooting scare in the first month. The battery stopped discharging during a cloudy evening, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the settings and found that a firmware update had reset the backup reserve to 30 percent. Once I lowered the reserve to my preferred 15 percent, discharge resumed normally. I was relieved that it was a settings issue rather than a hardware fault, but I now check the app after every update.

The practical benefit is not just the lower bill. The solar-plus-storage setup makes our power use feel more predictable, and we have short backup protection during outages. I still watch consumption on several cloudy days, but I no longer feel forced to run appliances when the sun is shining. For me, the battery has been worthwhile because it turns midday solar production into useful evening energy instead of letting that value disappear.
