Last spring, I added a 10 kWh home battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to avoid buying expensive electricity in the evening. The installation was handled by an Elektrofachbetrieb, and the whole process took most of a day. They connected the battery storage system to my existing inverter, installed the safety equipment, and explained the monitoring app without making it unnecessarily complicated.

The first few weeks were surprisingly satisfying. Before the battery, my solar panels exported a lot of power around lunchtime, while I was still paying for electricity after dinner. Now the battery charges during the day and usually covers our cooking, lights, television, and dishwasher until bedtime. On sunny days, our evening grid consumption has dropped almost to zero. My monthly bill fell by roughly €35 to €50, depending on the weather and how much we use the heat pump.

The biggest difference is during peak-rate hours. I used to run the dishwasher at odd times to save money, but now I simply use stored solar energy when the tariff is highest. It feels less restrictive, especially with two children in the house.

I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging and showed “standby” in the app, even though it was 7 p.m. and the battery was 68% full. I checked the cables and settings, but nothing looked wrong. The installer found that the update had changed the minimum reserve setting to 70%. Once they reset it to 15%, the battery worked normally again. That experience taught me not to panic over every warning message.

I am not completely energy-independent, particularly during dark winter weeks, but the solar battery has made our electricity use much more predictable. For me, the practical value is not just backup power; it is using more of my own solar energy and seeing the savings every month.
