Keeping my electricity bills under control became a lot easier after I installed a 5kWh lithium solar battery with my 3kva growatt inverter last autumn. I had solar panels for two years, but I was still sending much of the afternoon power back to the grid and buying it again during the evening peak.

The biggest practical change has been cooking dinner on stored energy. Before the battery, our oven, induction hob, lights, and television all came on around 6 p.m., exactly when electricity was most expensive. Now the battery usually reaches that period at about 85 percent, then carries the house until bedtime. On sunny days, it recharges fully before lunch, so the evening load costs almost nothing from the utility.

My daily bill savings vary, but I’m averaging roughly $2 to $3 per day compared with the months last year. That works out to around $70 to $90 monthly, although cloudy weeks reduce the benefit. I also noticed the battery charge limit matters: leaving a little room before noon helps capture sudden bursts of solar generation instead of clipping them.

My hiccup happened during a three-day stretch of rain. The inverter showed a low-battery warning overnight, and the battery stopped discharging at 20 percent. I thought something had failed, but the installer explained that the reserve setting was protecting the battery. I changed the backup reserve from 30 to 20 percent, and it behaved normally once the sun returned. I kept the higher reserve afterward because outages are common here.

I’m not pretending this setup eliminated my power bill, and battery storage was not cheap. Still, seeing the energy monitor show solar production filling the battery instead of exporting everything feels useful. For my home, the combination of time-of-use savings and outage backup has made the investment feel worthwhile.
