8 months ago, I installed a 280ah 12v solar battery beside my rooftop solar system, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity in the evening. I live in a two-bedroom house, so my setup is modest: a 12V inverter, a charge controller, and one lithium solar battery in a ventilated utility cupboard.

The installation was less intimidating than I expected. I mounted the battery securely, checked the cable sizes twice, and added a fuse close to the positive terminal. My biggest surprise was how quickly the battery changed our routine. During sunny hours, the panels now run the refrigerator, washing machine, and home office while charging the battery. After sunset, the stored energy powers lights, the router, television, and sometimes a small fan.

The financial difference shows up most clearly during peak hours. Before adding energy storage, our evening usage pushed the bill noticeably higher. Now I avoid grid electricity between 5 and 10 p.m. My monthly bill has fallen by about 30 percent, although the exact saving depends on cloudy weather and how often we use the tumble dryer. I still connect to the grid occasionally, but I no longer feel as though every evening appliance is wasting money.

I did have one troubleshooting moment. The battery monitor showed a sudden low-voltage warning after several rainy days. I initially blamed the solar battery, but the real issue was that I had run the washing machine and kettle together while the panels were producing almost nothing. I reduced the load, charged from the grid briefly, and the warning disappeared. Since then, I watch the battery state of charge more carefully.

The system has made our home quieter financially and practically. I am considering adding another 280ah 12v solar battery next year, but for now this setup covers our nighttime loads reliably.
