Solution Solar Battery
4 months ago I installed a 24v lithium ion battery beside my inverter after getting tired of watching solar power disappear into the grid every afternoon. The setup was less intimidating than I expected: my installer mounted the battery, connected the monitoring cable, and walked me through the charge settings. I chose a conservative 90% maximum charge and 20% reserve, mainly because I wanted backup power without shortening the battery life.
Before storage, our panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but we still bought expensive electricity between 4pm and 9pm. Now the battery charges from surplus solar and runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat pump after sunset. I can see the flow in the app, and that graph has become oddly satisfying. On sunny days, our evening grid use is nearly zero. Our monthly bill fell from around $180 to $75 in spring, although winter savings are smaller because short days and heating demand limit the available solar energy.
The best surprise is how calm the system makes outages feel. During one storm, power flickered twice. The inverter switched to backup automatically and kept the modem and refrigerator running. I did not even notice until my neighbor texted asking whether our power was out. That moment made the solar battery feel like more than a bill-saving gadget.
I did have one minor troubleshooting issue. The app showed the battery offline after a router update. The battery itself was still working, but I could not check its state remotely. Rebooting the inverter and reconnecting Wi-Fi fixed it in about ten minutes. I now keep the inverter manual nearby and check firmware updates before changing network settings.
For my household, the combination of rooftop solar panels, lithium battery storage, and time-of-use pricing works well.
