8 months ago, I added a 280 lifepo4 cell battery bank to my home solar system, mainly to avoid buying expensive evening electricity. I already had rooftop solar, but the timing was frustrating: my panels produced plenty during the afternoon, then my family came home, cooked dinner, and used power just as the utility rate jumped.
The battery has made the biggest difference between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. I set the inverter to charge from solar first and discharge during peak hours. On a sunny day, the battery usually reaches 95% before lunch. By bedtime, it has covered the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and most of our cooking. Before storage, my evening usage was often 8 to 12 kWh from the grid. Now it is usually close to zero unless the weather has been poor for several days.
My monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to between $70 and $95, depending on heating and air-conditioning use. I am not counting the battery purchase as instant savings, but watching the utility meter stay nearly still during peak pricing has been very satisfying. The lifepo4 battery also feels less stressful than my old lead-acid setup because the voltage stays stable and the monitoring app shows state of charge, charging current, and inverter output clearly.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though it showed 62% capacity. I eventually found that the inverter had switched to backup-only mode after a brief grid outage. Re-selecting time-of-use mode fixed it, and I added a label near the controls so I would remember.
My favorite part is the quiet, predictable performance. There is no generator noise, no fuel storage, and no daily maintenance. I still check the battery temperature and connection readings once a week, but otherwise the solar battery simply does its job.
