9 months ago, I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate home battery alongside my rooftop solar panels. The decision was mostly about avoiding expensive evening electricity, and that is where I’ve noticed the biggest practical difference.
My installer mounted the battery in the garage and connected it to a hybrid inverter. Setup took most of one day. The only frustrating part was waiting for the monitoring app to show accurate data; it initially reported zero battery temperature. A firmware update and a quick restart fixed that, and I have not seen the issue since. The installer also left the battery reserve at 20 percent, so I still have backup power during outages.
The main win is peak-hour shifting. My utility charges much more after 4 p.m., so the battery stores midday solar generation instead of sending all of it back to the grid. Around sunset, it starts running the refrigerator, heat pump, lights, and dishwasher. On a typical clear day, I use 6–8 kWh from stored energy before bedtime. That has cut my evening grid purchases by roughly 70 percent. My monthly bill fell from about $185 last summer to $112 this summer, although rates and weather vary. I am not claiming the battery pays for itself quickly, but seeing fewer peak-rate kWh on the bill makes the investment feel worthwhile.
One small lesson was changing the backup setting. During a cloudy week, the battery stayed near its reserve because the system prioritized outage protection. I lowered the reserve to 10 percent temporarily, then restored it when the forecast improved. That gave me noticeably more usable solar storage without making me nervous about a power cut.
