8 months ago, I added a 10 kWh lithium solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to reduce the expensive evening electricity rates. The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the inverter, and set the system to charge from my solar panels during the day. I kept the existing grid connection as backup, so I never felt nervous about running out of power.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery, we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and used air conditioning while buying electricity at the highest rate. Now the battery usually covers those hours. On sunny days, it still has around 25–35% capacity left when we go to bed. My monthly bill dropped by roughly 30–40%, although the exact savings depend heavily on weather and how much air conditioning we use.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. During the first week, the battery stopped discharging because its reserve setting was accidentally left at 40%. I initially thought the solar battery had failed, but the monitoring app showed the issue clearly. I lowered the backup reserve to 20%, restarted the inverter, and everything returned to normal. I now keep the higher reserve only when a storm is forecast.
I also learned that an 18650 lithium battery charger is not a substitute for a home energy storage system. I use a small charger for individual cells in an old camping power bank, but my residential battery has its own battery management system, temperature monitoring, and inverter controls. That distinction matters.
Overall, the storage system has made our solar panels much more useful. I am not completely off-grid, but using stored solar power during peak hours has made the daily energy costs noticeably easier to manage.
