4:30 a.m. used to be the time my electric water heater quietly started draining the house battery. Since installing a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, I barely notice those starts anymore.
The battery charges from my rooftop solar during the morning, then carries us through the expensive evening hours. That simple shift has made the biggest difference to our bill. Before I installed storage, our summer bills often reached $180 because dinner, laundry, and cooling overlapped with utility peak rates. Last month, with similar weather, the bill was $79. I’m not claiming the battery erased everything; the cloudy days still require grid power, but the reduction is obvious.
I initially searched online for a “14 volt lithium battery,” but my installer explained that a whole-home system like mine needed a properly matched 48-volt battery bank instead. The setup itself was less dramatic than I expected. The crew mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup load panel, and configured the energy storage system to reserve 20% for outages. That reserve has already paid off emotionally during two short outages; the refrigerator never stopped, and I could keep the internet running.
One small annoyance appeared during the first week. The monitoring app showed the battery at 100%, even though solar production had ended, so I worried it was pulling power from the grid. Support walked me through the settings and explained that the inverter was completing its balancing cycle. After that, the percentage settled normally, and I have not seen the issue again.
My favorite practical change is running the dishwasher after lunch, when the solar panels are producing, instead of after dinner. It sounds minor, but moving that load means the battery enters the evening fuller, and I rely less on peak-rate electricity. That’s real savings.
