inverter goodwe

Nighttime used to be the most frustrating part of my electricity bill. I would charge my phone, run the dishwasher, and turn on the air conditioner after sunset, exactly when my utility’s rates were highest. Since adding a home solar battery, that routine has changed noticeably.

My rooftop solar panels now send excess daytime power into the battery instead of exporting nearly everything to the grid. Around 5 p.m., the battery starts supplying the house, and I usually make it through the evening without buying much electricity. On sunny days, it still has roughly 30–40% capacity when we go to bed. That has made the biggest difference to my peak-hour bill. My monthly bill dropped from about $180 to between $75 and $95, although winter savings are smaller because the panels produce less energy.

The setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage and connected it to my existing inverter goodwe. The monitoring app took me a few days to understand, but now I check solar generation, battery state of charge, and grid consumption with my morning coffee. I especially like seeing the battery discharge curve during dinner, when our electricity use is normally highest.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a software update, the battery stopped discharging for an evening and stayed at its reserve level. I checked the app and found that backup reserve had somehow been set to 80%. Lowering it to 25% fixed the problem immediately. It was not a hardware fault, but it reminded me that battery storage still needs occasional attention.

For me, the value is not just the lower bill. Having stored solar energy available during a short outage also gives me peace of mind. I am using more of my own renewable energy, buying less power during expensive hours, and paying closer attention to how our household actually consumes electricity.
