2 winters ago, I added a 10kWh home battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to avoid evening electricity prices.
The installation took most of a day, and the electrician spent extra time checking the old wiring in my garage. I appreciated that pause, because the battery cabinet ended up on a concrete wall away from rain, heat, and children.
Setup was less plug-and-play than the brochure suggested, but the monitoring app connected quickly once permissions were sorted out properly. I programmed the solar battery to charge from sunlight first, then power the house after four in the afternoon daily.
That schedule has made the biggest difference: dishwasher, heat pump, and cooking now run on stored solar during peak hours. Before storage, my bill regularly jumped above $180; lately, it is closer to $125, despite similar habits and utility rates.
The savings are not identical every month, since cloudy weather limits solar production, but battery still shaves off costly late-day consumption. I also keep a 12v 20a battery charger nearby for topping up a separate backup battery used during occasional outages.
It is not connected to my battery but has rescued my refrigerator once when a storm interrupted power overnight unexpectedly. The only annoyance has been occasional app lag; twice, the status remained frozen, although the battery itself continued working normally.
Restarting the gateway fixed it both times, and I learned to trust the inverter lights instead of refreshing phone repeatedly. I have not expanded the system yet, because current battery usually reaches morning with 20% reserve, which feels comfortable enough.
For me, the best feature is not independence from the grid; it is using solar power when electricity costs most. After several months, the battery storage feels like equipment: invisible most days, useful every evening, and genuinely reassuring during storms.
