2 summers ago I added a lithium solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. The installer mounted a 10kWh battery beside the inverter and connected it to my solar panels. Setup took one morning, although getting the monitoring app to show real-time battery state took longer than expected. I had previously researched a 12v 100ah lead acid battery, but chose lithium iron phosphate for usable capacity, lower maintenance, and a better cycle life.

Before storage, I routinely used the oven, heat-pump dryer, and dishwasher after sunset, when our utility rate jumped to 31¢ per kWh. Now the battery charges from surplus solar around lunchtime and carries those loads through the evening. My average monthly bill fell from roughly $145 to $78, even though our household habits barely changed. The biggest difference is during winter, when short days leave less solar energy. I still buy power, but the battery usually covers the costly 4–9 p.m. window. On sunny summer days, it often reaches 100% by 2 p.m., and I see almost no grid usage until morning.

One small hiccup showed me the value of monitoring. In the first month, the battery stopped discharging at 40%. The app displayed a vague “communication error.” I power-cycled the gateway, checked the Wi-Fi signal, and discovered a loose Ethernet lead behind the inverter. After reseating it, the system resumed normally. I now glance at battery state of charge and solar production each morning; that habit has caught two later warnings before they became failures.

The battery has not made my home energy independent, and I would not promise that to anyone. Still, its peak-hour savings are clear. I like knowing the panels are doing work after the sun goes down. For me, that is the strongest argument for home energy storage: not technology, but fewer expensive grid kilowatt-hours.
