2 years ago, I installed a small solar battery system after getting tired of watching my electricity bill jump every summer. The setup uses a 12.8 v lifepo4 battery bank connected to a 3.6 kW inverter and six rooftop panels. I chose this size because my main goal was covering evening usage, not running the entire house overnight.
Installation was fairly straightforward, although I had to clear a space in the utility room and add a sturdy shelf. My installer set the battery to charge from solar during the day and discharge after the grid rate changed in the afternoon. On the first evening, I kept checking the monitoring app like an anxious parent. It showed the battery dropping from 100 percent to 64 percent while the refrigerator, lights, and Wi-Fi stayed on. That simple sight made the investment feel practical, rather than theoretical.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m., when our utility charges are highest. Before storage, I would come home, cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and unknowingly pull expensive electricity from the grid. Now the inverter supplies most of that load from the battery. My daily grid consumption has fallen by roughly 7 to 10 kWh on sunny days. Looking at the bills, I am saving about $35 to $50 per month, depending on weather and how much cooking we do. That’s not a dramatic overnight transformation, but it is consistent and easy to notice.
I had one minor troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the battery reached its reserve early, and the app warned that backup output had stopped. I discovered the reserve was set to 30 percent. Lowering it to 20 percent restored the capacity, and I now keep extra reserve for outages. That small lesson made the system much easier to trust.
