Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
1,200 watts of solar panels went on my roof last spring, and I added a 10-kWh lithium battery mainly to avoid buying electricity during expensive evening hours. The installer mounted the battery in my garage beside the inverter, then walked me through the app instead of handing me a thick manual. That was useful: I could immediately see solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption in real time.
The first week was mostly about learning my routine. I programmed the solar battery to charge from rooftop solar until late afternoon and discharge from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., when my utility's rates are highest. Before storage, I averaged about $6 to $8 in daily grid charges on hot days, largely because cooking, laundry, and air conditioning overlapped. With the battery, my evening grid use usually drops close to zero.
In May, my monthly bill fell from $184 to $96, even though the weather was similar. That $88 difference is the most convincing part of the investment for me. I still pay a connection fee, and cloudy stretches force me to use some grid power, so I am not pretending the battery erased my bill. It simply shifted my solar energy into the hours when electricity costs more.
My one small troubleshooting moment happened during a winter outage. The battery kept essential circuits running, but I discovered my old camping fridge was connected to a separate 12-volt setup and was not charging as expected. I had bought a cheap 110 volt to 12 volt converter years earlier, but its input plug was loose. Once I reseated it and replaced a blown fuse, the fridge worked normally. That little issue taught me to label every circuit and test backup loads before an outage.
Overall, battery storage makes my whole home calmer.
