Early this spring, I added a 10 kWh lithium battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity in the evening. I already had solar panels, but before the battery, my daytime surplus went back to the grid for a modest credit. After dinner, I would buy that same energy back at a much higher rate.
The change was noticeable from the first full week. The battery charges between late morning and mid-afternoon, then powers our house after sunset. We run the dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator, lights, and sometimes the heat pump from stored solar energy. On sunny days, our evening grid consumption is almost zero. My monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35 to 45 percent, although winter savings are smaller because the panels produce less and the heating load is higher.
I chose a 48V battery setup with a hybrid inverter. The system is not magic—I still use the grid during several cloudy winter days—but the solar battery has made our energy use feel much more predictable. Instead of wasting midday solar or selling it cheaply, I use it when electricity costs the most. That practical shift, more than the impressive specifications, is what makes the investment worthwhile for my home.
