I installed a solar battery system last spring after watching my electricity bills climb every summer. The heart of it is a victron multiplus 12 2000 inverter charger paired with two lithium batteries and about 3.6kWh of usable storage. I wanted something practical, not a giant off-grid project, mainly to store daytime solar and avoid expensive evening power.
Setup was easier than I expected, although I did hire an electrician for the final wiring and safety checks. I mounted the inverter near the existing consumer unit, kept the batteries indoors, and connected the solar inverter through a protected circuit. The monitoring app took an afternoon to understand. At first, I kept changing settings because I thought every watt needed to be optimized. Eventually, I left the battery at a sensible reserve level and let the system handle the rest.
The biggest difference shows up between 4pm and 9pm. Before storage, I would return home, switch on the oven, heat pump, and dishwasher, and watch the smart meter jump into peak pricing. Now the battery supplies most of that load. On clear days, I often reach dinner with plenty of charge left; on cloudy days, I still get a few useful hours. My evening grid consumption has dropped noticeably, and my monthly bill is typically $35–$50 lower than last summer, despite using the same appliances.
A small hiccup happened: one morning the battery showed an error and stopped discharging. I found the inverter had switched to standby after a brief grid interruption. Cycling the system through the app fixed it, and I later adjusted the low-voltage cutoff with my electrician. It has not repeated.
I appreciate the quiet, automatic operation. I check the state of charge occasionally, but otherwise forget it. For my home, storage makes evening electricity cheaper and predictable.
