Originally, I bought a 10kWh home battery because my electricity bills kept jumping during the evening peak period. Our rooftop solar panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but we were sending too much power back to the grid and buying it back after dinner. The installer recommended a hybrid inverter, and I compared several models from lists of the top 10 solar inverters before choosing one with good local support.
The setup took one full day. Two technicians mounted the battery on a concrete wall in my garage, ran new conduit, and configured the energy management app. They also installed a backup load panel for the refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, lights, and garage door. I liked that they explained the settings instead of simply handing me a password. We set the battery to charge from solar first, then discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., when rates were highest.
That schedule made an immediate difference. Before installation, our average summer bill was about 185 dollars. During the first full month with the battery, it fell to 112, even though our household usage stayed roughly the same. The biggest change came after sunset: instead of pulling electricity from the grid while cooking, running the dishwasher, and cooling the house, we used stored solar energy. On sunny days, the battery was usually full by early afternoon. On cloudy days, it still covered the expensive first part of the evening.
The app has been especially useful. I check it maybe twice a week, mostly to see the state of charge and whether the system followed its schedule. One night, I noticed the battery stopped discharging at 62%. The inverter showed a communication warning, although the panels were producing normally. I power-cycled the battery isolator, waited five minutes, and restarted the inverter. It recovered without losing settings. That small hiccup aside, this solar battery has made our daily energy costs much more predictable.
